What Do I Feed This Baby?

Unpublished short fiction

My wife found out she was pregnant using a home pregnancy test and we were excited. Three days later, before she’d even gone to see her doctor to confirm it, she went to a party to celebrate her friend’s adoption of an infant, which was brought back from Thailand. It was a beautiful Thai baby, with dark hair, thoughtful eyes, and a perfect little button mouth. My wife showed me a picture of the baby on her phone. Wow, I said, that is a cute damn baby.
One week later my wife attended a party for another friend’s baby, who was turning one year old. That baby had been adopted from Haiti. Same as before, my wife showed me a picture—curly dark hair, dark eyes, pudgy face, adorable little nose. Shit, I said, that kid’s even cuter!
Two days after that my wife got a message from her cousin—her favorite cousin—who had just picked up an adopted infant flown over from Burundi. It was the cutest baby I’d ever seen in my goddamn life.
